UFC APEX, Las Vegas, NV, USA
So - UFC 299 is in the books, and we are back to the APEX until further notice. This week’s fight night is another heavyweight clash between the #9 and #10 ranked fighters.
In honor of Tia Tuivasa fighting, I am going to also be power ranking the best walkouts in the UFC for all the active fighters. Spoiler alert… he will make the list.
Without further ado, let’s get into it.
Heavyweight Bout
Tai Tuivasa (15-6, #9) vs Marcin Tybura (28-8, see#10)
Case for Tai Tuivasa:
This feels like a must win for Tai at this point. It wasn’t long ago where Tai was all the sudden emerging as a contender after delivering one of the best knockouts of his career against Derrick Lewis.
That was back in late 2022, since then our man Tai has been on a skid.
It’s put up or shut up time. Tai is basically a brawler who isn’t a traditional mix martial artist, but is a fun as hell heavyweight. Want a reason to root for him? He will drink a beer out of a shoe if he wins.
Who doesn’t want to do a shoey on a Saturday?
Case for Marcin Tybura:
Here are Tybura’s last few fights. He won a couple in a row by decision, then suffered a deviating knockout from the now interm champion Tom Aspinall.
He does have some grappling, and is a bit more of a more well rounded mix martial artist. Also, like Tuivasa, he has a chance to get the KO/TKO at any time.
Prediction:
Tai Tuivasa. Lets do a shoey for St Patty's Day.
If I was a betting man, Tai Tuivasa moneyline. Because it’s a 5 round main event? Grab whatever extra odds you can betting Tuivasa by knockout.
Best Walkouts For Active(ish) UFC Fighters
Connor McGregor - "The Foggy Dew", Sinead O’Connor
The only walkout in UFC history that once allowed a fog machine, this walkout music is simply perfect for the Irishman. Hopefully we get to hear it again this summer.
Tua Tuivasa - Various Pop Songs
He’s come down to things like “My Heart Will Go On”, "Barbie Girl", Spice Girls, etc. He did reveal his Mom used to play that kind of music in the car growing up, so it’s as meaningful as it is entertaining.
Korean Zombie - "Zombie", The Cranberries
Iconic walkout music - perfectly fitting to Korean Zombie. The crowd always loves singing along - and his final walkout is one of my favorite moments of last year.
Colby Covington - Kurt Angle WWE Theme
Purposefully picks a song that is associated with America, wrestling, and “you suck” chants. Is there a better heel today than Colby?
Dustin Poirier - "The Boss", James Brown
At this point it just feels good hearing James Brown, knowing it will be followed by a highly entertaining Dustin Poirier fight.
Jan Blachowicz - Skyrim Theme
Its Skyrim. Its epic. He goes in that octagon with one idea in mind, FUS DO RAHing his opponent.
Donald Trump - "American Badass", Kid Rock
A sitting/former/running president coming down to this song gives me real Vince McMahon vibes. It’s ridiculous he has a walkout to come sit cage side, but it’s fitting.
Micheal “Venom” Page - Undertaker Theme
So Izzy did this song a few years back, but MVP gets a pass as he wasn’t here. He also remixed it and hit the imaginary gong perfectly, so I will give credit where credit is due.
Sean O’Malley - "Superstar", Lupe Fiasco
It’s really a fitting song to his dream and journey. It was a perfect song to be played after his victory against Aljo in Boston. It just works for him.
Stephen Thompson - "Wonderboy", Tenacious D
Who doesn’t want to hear Tenacious D in the UFC? In his last fight, they walked down to the ring with him that was also very funny. Also, who wouldn't want to be cornered by Jack Black?
Honorable Mention...
Mike Perry - "Halo", Beyonce
So this was actually a mistake and maybe my favorite walkout moment ever. He wanted to come down to the Halo theme from the video game, but the UFC accidentally put on Beyoncé. He rolled with it.
So there you have it - a main event breakdown and a walkout song power ranking. Enjoy the fun heavyweight fight! Let there be knockouts for all and for all a good night.
